ASTM D5587 Test Method for Tear Strength by Trapezoid Method
ASTM D5587 Test Method for Tear Strength by Trapezoid Method
The ASTM D5587 standard specifies the use of trapezoidal specimens to determine the tear strength of nonwoven fabrics. This standard can be applied to a wide variety of textiles for their continuous tear resistance, such as resistance to foreign objects such as steel nails or bolts.
The sample is cut into an equal trapezoid, and a notch is cut on the short side. The sample is clamped in the fixture, and the notch cut on the short side of the sample is torn as the upper and lower fixtures are separated.
Continuously record the force-displacement data of the sample, and finally calculate the trapezoidal tear strength. There are two kinds of calculation of tear strength: one is the single peak maximum value, and the other is the average of five maximum peak values.
For this test, the data It is suggested that the collection rate should not be lower than 500Hz. Prepare samples for fabrics with small elongation and elastic fabrics respectively, and cut 5 samples in the warp and weft directions according to the standard requirements. Set the distance between the upper and lower clamps to 25mm, and the stretching speed to be 100mm/min; Hold the sample along the non-parallel sides of the trapezoid, so that the incision is located between the upper and lower clamps, and keep the incision on the short side in a taut state and the long side in a wrinkled state. Start the Instron universal material tester, the tear force value and the clamp displacement are automatically recorded by the electronic recording device, and the displacement-load curve is drawn. According to the proposed value scheme, determine the specific value interval on the measured displacement-load curve, calculate the average value of all peaks in the current interval, and use this average value as the trapezoidal tear strength value of the current sample. Take the average value of 5 samples as the trapezoidal tearing strength in a certain direction of the current sample.
The trapezoidal tear strength test requires a jaw face with a width-to-height ratio of at least 2 x 3 inches. It is recommended that the grip used for the test be a pneumatic flat push, which can effectively prevent the specimen from slipping. We also recommend using an Instron single-column or double-column Column Electronics Universal Test Equipment. Because the Instron Bluehill 2 application software package can provide proper control, accurate tear strength results calculation and build effective reports.
Finally, users are reminded to familiarize themselves with the standards before conducting any tests And get a complete understanding of all needs. More about tear strength testing machine:
