Digital oxygen index tester GB2406 oxygen index method to determine the flammability of plastics

Digital oxygen index tester is used to test the flame retardant properties of foamed plastics, fabrics, films, films and other materials. In addition, the technical research and development engineer said that the GB/T2406 test method is a common method. GB/T2406 describes the measurement method of the low oxygen concentration required to maintain the combustion of the sample in the oxygen and nitrogen mixture under the specified test conditions. The result is defined as the oxygen index. It is suitable for strip or sheet materials with a sample thickness of less than 10.5mm that can stand upright and self-supporting. It is also suitable for homogeneous solid materials, laminates or foam materials with an apparent density greater than 100kg/m3, and some apparent density less than 100kg/m3. 100kg/m3 foam material, and provides test methods for sheet materials or films that can be supported upright. Test principle: Fix a sample vertically in a transparent combustion cylinder of oxygen and nitrogen mixed gas flowing upward, ignite the top of the sample, and observe the combustion characteristics of the sample, and compare the continuous burning time or burning length of the sample with the given value. The small value of the oxygen concentration is estimated by a series of experiments at different oxygen concentrations compared with the established criteria. For comparison with the specified Small Oxygen Index value, three specimens are tested and at least two specimens are judged to be extinguished according to the criterion. Test device: 1. Test combustion cylinder It consists of a heat-resistant glass cylinder that is vertically fixed on the base and can lead to oxygen-containing mixed gas (see Figure 1 and Figure 2). The preferred combustor size is height (500±50) mm, inner diameter (75——100) mm. The top of the combustion cylinder has a restrictor hole, and the flow rate of the exhaust gas is at least 90mm/s. 2. Specimen holder It is used to vertically support the specimen in the center of the combustion cylinder. For self-supporting materials, the grip should be at least 15mm away from the near point where the test sample may be burned. For films and sheets, use the frame shown in Figure 2, with the specimen supported by two vertical frames, and marked at 20 mm and 100 mm from the top of the frame. Clamps and support frames should be smooth so that the updraft is less disturbed. 3. Air source Oxygen and/or nitrogen with a purity (mass fraction) of not less than 98%, and/or clean air [containing oxygen 20.9% (volume fraction)] can be used as the gas source. Unless the test results are not sensitive to the higher moisture content in the mixed gas, the moisture content of the mixed gas entering the combustion cylinder should be less than 0.1% (mass fraction). If the moisture content of the supplied gas does not meet the requirements, the gas supply system should be equipped with drying equipment, or equipped with moisture content detection and sampling devices. The connection of the gas supply pipeline should make the mixed gas fully mixed before entering the gas distribution device at the base of the combustion cylinder, so that the change of the oxygen concentration of the rising mixture below the sample level in the combustion cylinder is less than 0.2% (volume fraction) . 4. Gas measurement and control device Suitable for measuring the oxygen concentration (volume fraction) of the mixed gas entering the combustion cylinder, accurate to±0.5%. when at 23°C±The air flow through the combustion cylinder at 2°C is 40mm/s±At 2mm/s, the accuracy of adjusting the concentration is±0.1%. A detection method should be provided to ensure that the temperature of the mixed gas entering the combustion cylinder is 23°C±2°C. If there is an internal probe, the position and shape of the probe should be designed so that there is little disturbance in the combustor. NOTE: A more suitable measurement system or control system includes the following components: a) Needle valves on each gas supply line and gas mixture line, a paramagnetic oxygen analyzer (or equivalent analyzer) capable of continuous sampling and a A flow meter indicating that the gas flow rate through the burner is within the required range; b) calibrated connections, gas pressure regulators and pressures on each gas supply line; c) a needle valve and calibrated flow rate on each gas supply line count. 5. The igniter consists of one end with a diameter of 2mm±It consists of a 1mm tube that can be inserted into the combustion cylinder and sprayed with flame to ignite the sample. The fuel for the flame should be propane unmixed with air. When the tube is inserted vertically, the fuel supply should be adjusted so that the flame shoots 16mm vertically downward from the outlet±4mm. 6. Timer The measurement time can reach 5min, and the accuracy±0.5s. 7. Smoke exhaust system There are ventilation and exhaust facilities, which can remove the soot or ash particles in the combustion cylinder, but cannot interfere with the gas flow rate and temperature in the combustion cylinder. NOTE: If testing smoking material, the glass burner must be cleaned to ensure good visibility. The gas inlet, inlet screen and temperature sensor must also be cleaned to function properly. Appropriate precautions should be taken to protect personnel from injury or burns from toxic materials during testing or cleaning operations. 8. The tool for preparing the film roll consists of a stainless steel rod with a diameter of 2 mm and a slit at one end (see Figure 3).

What Are the ISTA Standard Tests and ISTA Testing Equipment?
ISTA (International Safe Transit Association) standard tests are globally recognized transportation packaging test procedures designed to evaluate the safety and reliability of products and their packaging throughout the logistics chain. By simulating real-world transportation conditions such as drops, vibration, impact, stacking, and compression, ISTA testing helps identify potential packaging weaknesses before products enter large-scale distribution. ISTA testing equipment—including drop testers, vibration testers, incline impact machines, and compression testers—plays a critical role in accurately reproducing these conditions under laboratory settings. Proper selection and use of ISTA-compliant equipment enable manufacturers to reduce transportation damage, lower return costs, enhance packaging design, and improve customer confidence in product quality and logistics safety.
