What is an oxygen index tester?

The equipment for measuring the oxygen index is called an oxygen index tester. This tester can measure the oxygen index of a variety of materials such as plastics, rubber, textile fabrics, wood, foam materials and other polymer materials. The instrument is mainly composed of combustion cylinder, sample holder, gas source, flow meter and control part.  Sample holder: used to support the sample vertically in the center of the combustion tube. For self-supporting materials, the clamp should be at least 15mm away from the nearest point where the test specimen may be burnt. For film or sheet, use a frame with two vertical sides to support the sample, and mark lines at 20mm and 100mm from the top of the frame. The fixture and support frame should be smooth to minimize the interference of the updraft.   Gas source: Oxygen and/or nitrogen and/or clean air with a purity (mass fraction) not less than 98% can be used as the gas source.   Combustion cylinder: It is composed of a heat-resistant glass cylinder which is vertically fixed on the base and can introduce oxygen-containing mixed gas. The preferred size of the combustion cylinder is height (500±50) mm and inner diameter (75~100) mm.  Timer: measuring time up to 5min, accuracy ±0.5s.   Smoke exhaust system: There are ventilation and exhaust facilities, which can remove the smoke or ash particles in the combustion tube, but can not interfere with the gas flow rate and temperature in the combustion tube.   Flow measurement and control system: It is composed of pressure gauge, stabilizing valve, pipeline and rotameter. The measured oxygen and nitrogen gas enter the combustion cylinder through the air inlet at the bottom of the combustion cylinder after passing through the gas mixer.   Igniter: It is composed of a tube whose end diameter is 2mm±1mm, which can be inserted into the combustion tube and spray flame to ignite the sample. The fuel of the flame should be propane without air. When the pipe is inserted vertically, the combustion supply should be adjusted so that the flame is sprayed vertically downward from the outlet 16mm ± 4mm.
