Analysis of Pilling Influencing Factors and Testing Methods

Analysis of Pilling Factors and Testing Methods Analysis of Factors Affecting Pilling and Testing Methods: Pilling Test Pilling is a standard physical test and a quality indicator frequently highlighted in consumer feedback and complaints during everyday apparel use. Continuous friction from external sources and wearers exposes fiber ends on fabric surfaces, leading to the unsightly phenomenon of pilling. This is termed “pilling.” If these fuzzies do not shed quickly during wear, they become entangled to form spherical particles, known as “pills.”

Pilling Test Methods

1. Pilling Box ICI Pilling Test Method

Pilling Box ICI Pilling and Snagging Tester GT-C18
ICI Pilling and Snagging Tester, to determine the surface pilling and snagging properties of both woven and knitted materials. ICI Pilling Box Tester complies in full with the requirements of EN ISO 12945-1 and BS 5811, etc.

2. Martindale Abrasion Test Method
Martindale Abrasion and Pilling Tester GT-C13B
The Martindale Abrasion and Pilling Tester GT-C13B offers a new and upgraded design, driven by a dual servo system. Its motion is based on a precise Lissajous trajectory, generated by advanced digital algorithms. The operation is highly accurate, featuring a fully automatic one-click calibration system.

Equipped with six versatile test modes—abrasion 60×60, pilling 24×24, 60-X, 60-Y, 24-X, and 24-Y—the system seamlessly switches modes with a single click, eliminating the need for additional hardware adjustments. This machine is ideal for evaluating the abrasion and pilling resistance of various textile structures. During testing, samples are subjected to low-pressure rubbing against specific abradents with continuously changing directions, and their performance is compared against standardized benchmarks.

3. Random Tumble Pilling Test Method
2 Test chambers Random Tumble Pilling Tester GT-C19A
Random tumble pilling tester, used to determine the pilling and fuzzing characteristics of textile fabrics. Precision high-speed impeller for agitating the test specimens against cork lining for a pre-determined time controlled by a timer and audible alarm. Compressed air is also injected into the chamber to assist in the tumbling action. Laboratory standard compressed air supply required.
