New spectroscopic instrument uses Earth's own magnetic field to detect residual chemicals

The development of science and technology has promoted the progress of spectroscopy technology. Recently, new spectrometers have been launched in the field of spectroscopy at home and abroad, providing technical support for food safety and environmental protection. On March 15, Los Alamos National Laboratory designed a new spectroscopic instrument that can use Earth's own magnetic field to decipher even trace amounts of chemicals. It is reported that the instrument is called“Earth Magnetic Field Resonance Detection and Evaluation Device”(ERDE, German for“ Earth”), the most sensitive, inexpensive, and portable technology of its kind, capable of detecting a wide variety of chemicals. Often used in science labs, biological weapons, and even trace amounts of pesticides in drinking water. Derek Derek, co-leader of the Los Alamos and ERDE project·Derrick Kaseman said:“Using the Earth's magnetic field, we can do things that were not possible before. ERDE provides a perfect magnetic environment for highly accurate detection and identification of chemicals, while making the spectrometer smaller and therefore more portable than other spectrometers currently on the market that perform similarly detailed analyses. MRI uses a large magnetic field to map the chemical composition (mainly water) in the human body. This is possible because the nuclei of certain molecules (such as the hydrogen in H2O) spin at a specific speed in a magnetic field. Depending on where the hydrogen atoms are located in the body (such as body fat versus muscle) and where they are chemically bonded (such as oxygen in H2O), their speed varies, which makes MRI magnets responsive to them . unique frequency. The result is a detailed image of the chemical compounds that make up organs, tissues and other biological materials. ERDE works similarly, except it senses compounds in a smaller volume. ERDE spectrometers, which are a bit larger than microwaves, work by passing a sample through a small set of magnets, which help build a signal in the spinning nucleus. Chemical samples are quickly moved into small boxes that take advantage of Earth's natural magnetic field. This is the same force that guides a compass needle to point north. The chemical's interaction with Earth's magnetic field is then detected. Current spectroscopic techniques are carried only using permanent magnets, making them significantly less sensitive to chemical detection. Highly sensitive spectrometers, such as MRI, that use superconducting magnets are too large to carry, sometimes as high as two floors. Although they are very accurate, they rely on limited and expensive cryogenic liquids, such as helium and nitrogen, which are not easily portable. ERDE is easy to use in a variety of settings, such as on a laboratory bench, where scientists can test compounds they develop. It can be deployed to areas where chemical weapons are suspected of being used by governments, terrorist groups or assassins, as was the case with the recent Syrian civil war or the poisonings of Skripal and Navalny. ERDE also makes it easy for regulators to ensure that companies only use approved chemicals in their products. In addition, it can continuously monitor tap water through the pipes of pumping stations to prevent chemical compounds used in pesticides and other toxic substances from entering people's homes.
