New spectroscopic instrument uses Earth's own magnetic field to detect residual chemicals

Highly sensitive spectrometers, such as MRI, that use superconducting magnets are too large to carry, sometimes as high as two floors. Although they are very accurate, they rely on limited and expensive cryogenic liquids, such as helium and nitrogen, which are not easily portable. ERDE is easy to use in a variety of settings, such as on a laboratory bench, where scientists can test compounds they develop. It can be deployed to areas where chemical weapons are suspected of being used by governments, terrorist groups or assassins, as was the case with the recent Syrian civil war or the poisonings of Skripal and Navalny. ERDE also makes it easy for regulators to ensure that companies only use approved chemicals in their products.
