A new type of textile material fermented by yeast

Students from the Fashion Department of Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in Australia are using a new method to make clothing materials, a sustainable material, and recently presented their research results to the media. This is a fermentation process similar to beer brewing or making yeast dough. The yeast medium is cultured in a petri dish to form a curd-like substance, which will form a brand-new clothing material. In the laboratory of the Queensland State Library, students from Queensland University of Technology used coffee, tea, red wine and syrup to conduct experiments. Dean Brough, a lecturer in his own fashion studio, said that the production process is both stylish and forward-looking. He said: 'This process is terrible and a bit disgusting. The yeast medium is wet and sticky, and the taste may be very pungent, but when this material is made into clothes, it will be very exciting.' Whether it is tea or coffee Both red wine and syrup can be used as the 'food' of the yeast culture medium, and the final materials obtained from each different 'food' have different characteristics. ????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? Bruff said that the texture of the clothing material formed through the fermentation process is close to that of the skin. After a week of drying, the moisture is evaporated and the material itself becomes thinner. Nevertheless, the students left it intact after being 'ravaged' in the washing machine, proving that this material is a very strong fiber product. Alice Payne, a lecturer at Queensland University of Technology, Australia, said that students have experimented with new materials, such as color spraying the yeast medium or dyeing the medium. Bruff said that the smell emitted during this process is very similar to the smell of beer fermentation. Although the taste is not good, the final result is like the sweetness after drinking, and the final product has no peculiar smell. Bluff said that the traditional clothing industry wastes 20% to 39% of the fiber in the process of making clothing with fiber materials. A student of Lost Master Technology at Queensland University of Technology, Australia, said that such a living clothing material, this job fascinated her. By the end of October, the school will exhibit clothing made of this material at TheEdge.
