Comparative Analysis of Vertical Burning ASTM D6413 and GB/T5455

Both ASTM D6413 and GB/T5455 standards are used to test the vertical burning characteristics of fabrics. In terms of test scope, test process, and evaluation indicators, the two test standards are basically the same. There are obvious differences in the design of the fire tube, the ignition time and so on. It can also be seen that during production acceptance and commodity trading, both parties need to discuss product testing standards in order to unify the testing and evaluation system. 1. The general test steps of ASTM D6413 and GB/T5455 have the following four aspects: 1. Preparation of test equipment. Including the adjustment of the flame length, the adjustment of the position of the flame-throwing head (the flame-throwing head should be located directly under the test fabric), and the distance between the flame-throwing head and the extreme end of the sample. Generally, it should be ignited for a period of time before the test, which is not only to adjust the flame height, but also to remove the air left in the pipe. 2. Preparation of the sample: The sample is cut and added to the sample holder, suspended on the sample holder, and suspended in the box. 3. Test: including the ignition test within the standard time, recording the after-burning time and smoldering time by manually touching the stop switch, recording the burning state of the sample, whether there is any droplet phenomenon, etc. 4. Recording and evaluation: This part organizes the content recorded during burning, and hangs a heavy hammer on one side of the burning fabric according to their respective standards, and lifts the other end slowly by hand. The tearing length at the burning place is called the carbonization length or Damaged length. 2. The differences between ASTM D6413 and GB/T5455 are mainly in the following aspects 1. Box and components: GB/T5455 box and components: There are slight differences in the size of the box in the two standards, and the ignition devices are completely different. There are also differences in the sample fixture, but this does not affect the completion of the test and the completeness of the equipment functions. 2. The ignition device and ignition mechanism are different: one is to control the time of gas introduction, after reaching the time specified in the standard, the gas is turned off, and the external source combustion stops. One is to move the flame position. After the standard ignition time, the flame position is far away from the sample. It can be seen from the ignition device of ASTM D6413 that there are two vent pipes and two flames will appear, one for ignition and one for igniting the specimen. 3. Judgment of damaged length: All are folded in half according to the top of the burning part, and the test is carried out on this basis, but there are differences in size. GB/T5455 details the different weights of different fabrics.
