    Application

This is designed to test the thermal protective and insulation performance of exposed outer surfaces (including flame-retardant protective clothing, fire-fighting suits, fire boots, gloves, and helmet exteriors) made of flame-retardant fabrics when exposed to radiant and convective heat sources. It supports calculations for TPP (Thermal Protective Performance) value, TPE (Thermal Protective Evaluation) test, and FFF (Fabric Flammability Factor) algorithm.

    Principle

Under specified heat flux, the second-degree burn time is derived from the intersection of the response curve (calorimetric sensor temperature rise curve) and Stoll curve (human tissue tolerance curve). Higher product of heat flux level and second-degree burn time denotes superior thermal protection of the fabric.

    NFPA thermal protective performance tester

The thermal protective performance tester can measure the conductive and convective heat transferred through and stored in the test specimen in the period of exposure. The measurement can be used to predict the time to get a second degree burn to evaluate the thermal protective performance of the specimen.

This TPP test is critical for ensuring firefighter safety, offering reliable performance under extreme conditions.

    FAQ

Tell us about your project requirements and we will figure out a PPE testing solution that will meet your budget and design expectations.

    1
What is the thermal protective performance (TPP) test?
TPP (Thermal Protective Performance) test measures how well a fabric/garment blocks convective + radiant heat from causing a 2nd-degree burn. It exposes samples to a heat flux of 2 cal/cm²·sec (83 kW/m²), calculates TPP = heat flux × time to 2nd-degree burn (unit: cal/cm²). Higher = better protection
    2
What is a TPP rating of 35?
A TPP 35 means the gear takes 17.5 seconds (35 ÷ 2) to cause a 2nd-degree burn under standard test conditions. It’s the minimum NFPA 1971 requirement for structural firefighter turnout gear. Unit: cal/cm².
    3
    How to test thermal protection?
For TPP test: Expose fabric sample to combined radiant + convective heat (2 cal/cm²·sec) Measure heat transfer through sample with a heat flow meter Compare to Stoll burn standard curve to find time to 2nd-degree burn Calculate TPP = heat flux × time Common standards: ASTM D4018, NFPA 1971, ISO 17492
    4
What is the TPP rating for fire gear?
Structural firefighter turnout gear (NFPA 1971) requires a minimum TPP 35. Higher ratings mean longer protection time before 2nd-degree burns
