ASTM D642 Standard and Testing Method
ASTM D642 test method covers compression tests on shippingcontainers (for example,boxes and drums) or components,orboth. Shipping containers may be tested with or withoutcontents.The procedure may be used for measuring the ability of the container to resist external cormpressive loads applied toits faces, to diagonally opposite edges, or to corners.This test method covers testing of multiple containers or unit loads, in addition to individual shipping containers,components,materials, or combination thereof.
This test method is related to TAPPI T804, which issimilar for fixed platen machines but does not recognize swivelplaten machines.
Test Procedure
Select a sample size and condition each specimen as indicated
Carefully center the specimen on the bottom compression platen
Slowly bring the top platen into contact with the specimen
Apply the desired pre-load
Make sure your system is set to specimen deformation
Begin to apply load at the constant rate indicated in the specification
Continue test until failure or specified load
Repeat this procedure with each specimen

Strength test
Strength test which belongs to a destructive test is mainly used to measure the deformation when the sample is loaded with maximum pressure or crushing strength.
Constant Value Test
There are two parameters which are to be set in the constant value test: load force value and deformation value. The user can set one or both of them according to the practical requirement. the measure is complete when any parameter reaches the set value.
Stacking Test
Stacking Test is used to check up that whether the sample can endure a constant pressure in a given time period. Set up two parameters: compressive strength and testing time (hour).
when the test starts, the system will check the current pressure at any moment to ensure the set value; the measure is complete when the test time is expired or the deformation value exceeds the set one within testing time.
The overall system is in good parallelism, stationarity and high return speed.
