Bursting strength is a key mechanical property characterizing the ability of a material to resist rupture when subjected to concentrated loads in the vertical direction. It is primarily measured using ball-type bursting strength testers or hydraulic/pneumatic testing equipment, and includes parameters such as bursting strength value, elongation and rupture pattern.
In the textile industry, this index is widely used to assess the durability of knitted, non-woven and coated fabrics, such as sleeve seam integrity in sweaters and toe durability in hosiery and other practical application scenarios for quality control.
Bursting strength is measured by applying a concentrated load perpendicular to the surface of a specimen by means of a steel ball or a fluid medium, and recording the maximum force at the moment of rupture and the associated deformation parameters. The main methods include:
Ball Burst Strength Method: A steel ball with a diameter of 20-38mm is used to press the specimen at a constant rate, which is suitable for flexible materials such as textiles and polymer films.
Hydraulic Bursting Method: Hydraulically push the rubber diaphragm to make the specimen bi-directional expansion, mostly used for thick industrial fabric testing.
Pneumatic Bursting Method: compressed air is used to generate a uniform pressure field, especially suitable for assessing the performance of breathable materials.
Raw materials: Different raw materials have different fibre strengths and toughnesses, resulting in large differences in fabric breaking strength. For example, among chemical fibres, nylon has the highest breaking strength, followed by polyester; among natural fibres, hemp has the highest strength, followed by cotton.
Yarn properties: The yarn count, diameter, and filament vs. staple fiber composition significantly affect fabric bursting strength.
Fabric organisation: The organisation of a fabric has a significant effect on its breaking strength. Tighter organisations have a higher breaking strength, while looser organisations are more prone to breakage.
Yarn arrangement: The way the yarns are arranged in the fabric affects the breaking strength. A more uniform yarn arrangement helps to increase the breaking strength of the fabric.
Sample Preparation and Testing Conditions: The size and shape of the sample, the method of preparation, and the ambient temperature and humidity during the test will all affect the results.
