NASA's James Webb Space Telescope's science instruments have been successfully installed

With surgical precision, more than two dozen engineers and technicians have successfully packaged the James Webb Space Telescope's instruments onto the telescope. The instrument package is a combination of camera and spectrometer that will record the light collected by Webb's giant golden mirror. In the world's largest clean room at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbet, Maryland, Webb's team used a crane to lift the heavy instrument bag, place it in a closed enclosure behind the telescope, and secure it to the telescope.“Our crew is positioning in a very small space with a very expensive unit,”Jamie Dunn, manager of ISIM (ISIM stands for Integrated Module for Scientific Instruments) said,“We need to keep the room quiet so if someone is talking we can hear what they are saying. Not only can you hear what other people are saying, but you can also know if it sounds normal.”Prior to this program, engineers and technicians had been trained on test runs, computer modeling training, and operating on an instrument package model. This is a mission critical operation.“This is a huge achievement for our global team,”John Mather said the James Webb Space Telescope project scientist is also a Nobel laureate.“In this package are important instruments from Europe and Canada as well as the United States, and we are proud that 20 years after we started designing our observatory, everything is running so smoothly.”Now that the structures of the instruments, mirrors and telescope are assembled, the combination will undergo vibration and acoustic testing to ensure the entire science payload will withstand launch conditions.“With current new technologies, designing and manufacturing something of this scale and complexity is far from simple,”Dunn said,“While every project has its ups and downs, the JWST team had to overcome a variety of difficulties throughout the project. The quality and dedication of this team has been extraordinary, they have always been outstanding, and they have made many personal sacrifices to get the project where it is today.”The James Webb Space Telescope is the scientific successor to NASA's Hubble Space Telescope. It will be the most powerful space telescope ever built. Webb will be studying many stages of our cosmic history, including the formation of solar systems that could support life on Earth-like planets, and the evolution of our own. Webb will launch in 2018 on an Ariane 5 rocket from French Guiana. Webb is an international project developed jointly by NASA and its partners the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Canadian Space Agency.
